Nightmare

Limited Edition Print, 2021

  • Paco Pomet’s 2006 large-scale painting Pasadilla (Spanish for Nightmare) is widely regarded as a quintessential example of his distinctive and thought-provoking style. Based on a 1936 photograph of Spanish dictator Franco and his officers at Mount Esperanza in Tenerife, Pomet disrupts the solemn historical moment with an unexpected and surreal twist—the insertion of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie. This jarring juxtaposition encapsulates the dark humor and satirical edge that define his work.

In 2021, a limited edition screenprint of Pasadilla was released, printed and published by Pomet’s long-time collaborator Christian M. Walter. Comprising six meticulously layered screens, the print faithfully captures the tonal depth of the original painting, which itself remains strikingly true to the archival photograph from which it draws.
